Makeup artists can manipulate the shapes and features of the face and body using artistry techniques. Although this cannot be accomplished without a thorough understanding of the human body's proportions, shapes, and anatomical structure
The human anatomy's functions and proportions, as well as its individual skeletal or muscular size, shape, and functions, are important in creating realism. Another important skill in the creation of realism is the ability to draw light, shadow, and form, as well as how these elements land on the surface of the face and body.
Painting, drawing, and understanding the body, when combined, give the makeup artist the skill and ability to interpret how to change an individual's features to look like something or someone else. It is, indeed, a necessary skill to learn in all areas of makeup artistry. "Anatomy is an applied science that supports fine art; the study of structure is necessary for artistic representation." The creature's proportions and movement are determined by its skeleton, joints, and muscular system." (See Fehér 7.)
